This album is like putting on an old coat and finding a tenner in the pocket. Crowded House broke up nearly four years ago; we've had the Greatest Hits, and Neil's solo album found him - understandably but irritatingly - rejecting his gift for writing catchy pop in order to wander in more experimental avenues. There was no reason to suppose that we'd ever get another classic Crowded House album. But here we are. Afterglow is a collection of tracks that weren't considered strong enough to make it onto the band's albums. There isn't anything as outstanding as Weather With You on here; but there are some lovely pop songs. Far from scraping the barrel, you get the impression that Capitol were skimming the cream; and that if there's another album - of songs not strong enough to get onto Afterglow - even that would be worth hearing.
