Ex-Crowded House man adds some subtle beats on second solo album.
Neil Finn can turn a prettier tune than almost anyone else alive but here he's added subtle beats
& loops & found some unlikely collaborators in former Prince cohorts Wendy & Lisa. Credit to him
for trying something different but at times it risks turning One Nil into an own goal. On
Elastic Heart & Hole in the Ice, the beats are self-concious & comes close to ruining a pair of
perfectly decent songs, & the best tracks are those like Last To Know, Turn And Round (sic) &
Driving Me Mad, which are in the great lyrical tradition which Finn has always mined so well.
Perhaps the album will prove to be a grower but it's nowhere near as immediate as Try Whistling
This.
