Neil Finn surfaces with a solid release

Despite what the title implies, Neil Finn's first solo record does not betray the melodicism that marked his work in Split Enz and Crowded House.

That said, Try Whistling This is far removed from the sprightly guitar-pop of Something So Strong or It's Only Natural -- instead, Finn creates dense, unsettling soundscapes using looped drums, minor-key synth tones, snaky bass lines and distorted guitar, all of which perfectly suits the sombre, introspective nature of the lyrics.

Whereas Finn's earlier songs provided instant gratification, much of his new material requires repeated listening before the songs' melodies and meanings reveal themselves. A challenging, sobering listen, but not without its rewards.
